I once found myself with a big contract to paint a hotel framed by azaleas in Funchal, the beautiful capital of Madeira. Since I received the request at the end of my week in Funchal, I took lots of photos and planned to execute the painting at home and to ship it to the client in Madeira. However, our rented car was burgled in Portugal and all of the photos and sketches were taken. My solution was to return to Madeira later in the year and to paint the hotel in trade for two weeks hospitality at the hotel. The manager, my client, agreed and I was successful in completing not only the commission in those weeks but also about a dozen other en-site watercolors. I sold five right off the board and thus paid for my airfare. The scene above was one that I brought home. It is the scene from my hotel balcony showing the mountainous terrain of the island and the fort above the town.
