This is an authentic Romanian gypsy I saw in Sigisoara several years ago. I loved Romania because I found it to seem lost to time. The architecture as well as the rural landscapes and farms struck me as almost medieval. As you can see by the modern traffic sign and the bicycle coming through the city gate, this is a contemporary scene. However, I couldn't escape the feeling that the background has been there for a thousand years!
I love color and the use of both cherry red of the sign and purplish magenta of the woman's skirt in the same painting was kind of interesting to me. I added the standing water and reflections in the street to add another element to the gray space of the paved street.
